Tuesday, we looked at Nate Irving and the reasons why the Oakland Raiders could be interested in him.
For much of the same reason, here is another free-agent linebacker who could interest the Raiders: Malcolm Smith.
You know, the former Super Bowl MVP.
The Raiders will likely be looking for a new starting middle linebacker. Nick Roach is unlikely to play this season because he has not been cleared after a concussion he suffered in August that cost him the 2014 season.
Smith, who was a postseason star for Seattle during its Super Bowl run in the 2013 season, is a key backup outside linebacker in Seattle, but coaches and scouts love his versatility and there is a belief around the NFL he could play middle linebacker. He is instinctive as well, which is key to play middle linebacker.
Smith’s linebackers coach at Seattle was Ken Norton Jr., who, of course, is now Oakland’s defensive coordinator. Smith also played for Norton at USC. Smith will likely get opportunities to start in free agency. I wouldn’t be shocked if one of those opportunities is in Oakland.
