Keenan Allen lasted just half a season last year, suffering a lacerated kidney against the Baltimore Ravens.
He’s played just one, 16-game season in three NFL seasons.
That said, Allen knows he can take over games if he stays healthy. Halfway through the 2015 season, the San Diego Chargers receiver had his way with whoever lined up against him.
Allen totaled 67 receptions before the injury, tied for third-most catches in NFL history through the first eight games of the season.
Tavon Austin, DeAndre Hopkins and Cordarrelle Patterson were all taken in the first round of the 2013 draft, and Allen fell to the third round.
Only Hopkins has had a more productive career up to this point. Allen is the second-most productive receiver from that draft class, with 215 catches for 2,554 yards and 16 touchdowns through three seasons.
"It was very frustrating," Allen said about last year’s injury. "I was on a good pace for the season, and we were doing good as an offense as well. So it was definitely tough, but it comes with the game.
"Knowing that I did it, and knowing that I can dominate the league is definitely motivation for me. Hopefully I can keep it going."
Allen says he healthy, and has not had any setbacks or limitations at this point of San Diego’s offseason training regimen.
As he did last offseason, Allen said he wants to trim his weight even more than last year so he can continue to play fast, when he played at about 211 pounds.
Allen said he should also benefit from the arrival of speedy receiver Travis Benjamin through free agency
"It’s major," Allen said. "With him being able to take the top off and have that threat for a safety, he (the safety) can’t drive on under routes as much, because you know that Travis can definitely take the top off as much as he wants to."
Now heading into his fourth season, Allen said he will take even more of a leadership role with veteran receiver Malcom Floyd retiring at the end of the 2015 season.
"When he got his locker replaced, I almost cried," Allen said about Floyd’s departure. "That’s my guy, though. Malcom kind of gave me the leadership role, too, last year. So we were both were leaders. But yeah, I’m definitely going to try and speak up a little bit more and say what I have to say."
