DAVIE, Fla. -- New Miami Dolphins running back Arian Foster has looked solid in training camp for about a week. However, the former Pro Bowler will not play in Friday's preseason opener against the New York Giants.
Dolphins coach Adam Gase said he already relayed the message to Foster, who is coming off a season-ending Achilles injury in 2015.
"He's one guy on offense I'm not going to play in this game. That's strictly my decision," Gase said. "I have a certain way I treat running backs that haven't played for a while. I don't like them taking any unnecessary hits in games where it might only be a couple of snaps for him. ... I want to keep him on track with that and the next week we'll reevaluate."
Foster signed with Miami one week before training camp but has flashed numerous times with smooth running and good hands. He is competing with Jay Ajayi for the starting job.
Here are some other notes from Wednesday's practice:
This was the first day in a while that Miami had plenty of success running the football. Isaiah Pead had the biggest run of the day with a 30-yard scamper for a touchdown in team drills. Foster and Ajayi both reeled off a few nice runs. The run blocking overall has struggled against Miami's defensive line in this camp.
The play of the day came from quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who connected deep with Ajayi out the backfield for a 30-plus yard gain. Ajayi had to make a diving catch up the left sideline to complete the play.
It was a rough day for rookie quarterback Brandon Doughty. The seventh-round pick threw an interception to backup safety Walt Aikens and had a near interception to cornerback Al Louis-Jean. Doughty also was sacked by linebacker Tyler Gray in team drills. Doughty has flashed in camp, but this was his toughest day so far.
Cornerback Chimdi Chekwa, defensive tackle Earl Mitchell and running back Kenyan Drake were among the players who didn't practice Wednesday.
The Dolphins will travel to northern New Jersey on Thursday to prepare for Friday's 7 p.m. ET game against the Giants.
