The New England Patriots informed cornerback Chimdi Chekwa that he will be released Monday.
Chekwa spent the first three years of his career with the Raiders, but wasn't tendered a contract by Oakland as a restricted free agent this offseason. The Patriots then signed him to a one-year deal with a $50,000 signing bonus and Chekwa was viewed as a player on the roster bubble.
The 6-foot, 190-pound Chekwa, who entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick out of Ohio State in 2011, has four career starts (32 games played overall).
ProFootballTalk.com first reported the news.
The Patriots' cornerback depth chart now looks like this: Malcolm Butler, Bradley Fletcher, Logan Ryan, Robert McClain, Dax Swanson, Justin Green and rookies Darryl Roberts, Jimmy Jean and Eric Patterson.
