FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Here are some highs and lows in terms of individual performances from the New England Patriots' 22-11 loss to the Green Bay Packers:
HIGHS
Jonas Gray: His 55-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, which was made possible by a surge off the right side in which guard Shaq Mason was involved, served as a reminder that he's in line to be the top "big back" in the season opener with LeGarrette Blount suspended.
David Andrews: The undrafted center from Georgia got the start in place of injured Bryan Stork and didn't seem to look out of place (although he appeared to be involved in a Jimmy Garoppolo sack when both he and right guard Tre' Jackson blocked the same player, allowing a runaway rusher). That he got the nod over third-year man Josh Kline seems to reflect that he shouldn't be overlooked when it comes to making a run at a roster spot. He moved to right guard briefly in the third quarter and his ability to pull was evident on a James White 7-yard run in the third quarter.
Jonathan Freeny: Focusing more on opportunity than anything else, the fourth-year linebacker from Rutgers got a lot of playing time early as Jerod Mayo and Dont'a Hightower dressed but didn't play. He looks like he has a chance to seize one of the team's top backup linebacker roles if he can take advantage of the opportunity, which was an area the team was targeting in the offseason.
Rufus Johnson: The first-year player out of Tarleton State showed up at defensive end with a batted-down pass on a screen, a sack, and another pressure. He looks the part at 6-foot-5 and 280 pounds, and flashed some potential that makes him a "sleeper" player to watch in the weeks to come if a fourth-quarter injury isn't serious.
LOWS
Josh Boyce: Third-year receiver had a third-down throw from Tom Brady sail through his hands, and didn't seem to create much separation on vertical routes down the field.
Cameron Gordon: Linebacker vying for a roster spot struggled to set the edge on a Packers touchdown run, and then was penalized for roughing-the-passer in the fourth quarter.
Logan Ryan: Cornerback was in coverage on a 23-yard touchdown catch by Packers receiver Jeff Janis in the second quarter, as he lost at the line of scrimmage and couldn't recover. He balanced the ledger a bit with tight coverage on a fourth-down stop.
