EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- After reviewing the tape from the preseason opener, talking with the coach and players, let's update where everything stands offensively entering the official final day of New York Giants training camp. (Note: Defense to follow on Tuesday morning)
Quarterback
Starter Eli Manning has (aside from Sunday) had a strong camp. There's little reason to believe he's not going to build on last season in his third year in coach Ben McAdoo's offense. Ryan Nassib played poorly in the preseason opener, and his accuracy and pocket presence remain issues. Nassib is going to be the backup regardless, but it will be telling how he bounces back the remainder of the preseason. Logan Thomas has consistently struggled, regularly holding onto the ball way too long at practice.
Running back
Rashad Jennings is the No. 1. It seems his late-season run last year has earned him that opportunity. He's run almost exclusively with the first-team offense this summer. Ditto Shane Vereen. Behind them it remains a muddled mess. Andre Williams looked spry and improved in the preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins. McAdoo described him as “sleeker.” He's third in line right now, sneaking onto the first team every so often. Orleans Darkwa continues to flash, but his opportunities are limited. He played just five offensive snaps on Friday, but remains a key special teams contributor. Fifth-round pick Paul Perkins has noticeable talent but probably isn't ready for a significant role just yet. Maybe as the season progresses. Bobby Rainey and Marshaun Coprich are on the outside looking in.
Wide receiver
The Victor Cruz situation hangs over this roster. He can't stay on the field to assist Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard, who has had the look of a mini-Beckham from the day he joined the Giants. Cruz hasn't done anything to earn a roster spot this summer, so he'll need to get healthy and produce on the field at some point. In his absence, Geremy Davis was in the lead for the third receiver spot and played well against the Dolphins, but he's now dealing with a minor hamstring injury. That could slow him down. He started strong last summer before tapering off. Dwayne Harris still has his role as wide receiver/special-teams ace, and Roger Lewis and Tavarres King have been two of the more consistent players on the field this summer. They are strongly in the running for roster spots. Darius Powe lurks while K.J. Maye, Anthony Dable and Kadron Boone are on the outside looking in.
Tight end
Any doubts about Larry Donnell coming off a neck injury have been erased this summer. He returns as a viable contributor in the passing game and red zone target. Will Tye is also in the first-team plans as the Giants have run a ton of sets with two tight ends. Matt LaCosse appears to be the favorite as the third tight end following a strong start to camp with Will Johnson not far behind. They may be the two best blocking options. Sixth-round pick Jerell Adams struggled in the preseason contest (had a penalty and a poor goal-line block) and will present the Giants with quite the dilemma. Can they get him to the practice squad? Undrafted rookie Ryan Malleck also has an outside shot to stick. Overall, this group has been impressive.
Offensive line
It would be a surprise if the starting Week 1 offensive line doesn't consist of (left to right) Ereck Flowers, Justin Pugh, Weston Richburg, John Jerry and Marshall Newhouse. Bobby Hart has had his ups and downs at right tackle in practice and the preseason opener. Newhouse has taken almost every single first-team rep, a clear indication that the Giants prefer him over Hart right now. After those six, it's completely up for grabs after an awful outing against the Dolphins. Adam Gettis and Byron Stingily didn't do themselves any favors in that contest. Even McAdoo conceded that Gettis “had a rough night.” It opens the door for Brett Jones, Emmett Cleary, Ryan Seymour, Shane McDermott and others. None have been overly impressive to date, although Jones and Cleary had the strongest outings of the bunch in the preseason opener.
