The New York Jets hired the best assistant coach in the NFL, according to the Pro Football Writers of America.
Former Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles was voted Assistant Coach of the Year by the PFWA, becoming the first Cards' assistant to receive the award, which began in 1993.
The Cardinals, in their second season under Bowles, finished fifth in the NFL in points allowed per game (18.7), tied for second in first downs allowed per game (18.8) and third in red-zone percentage (43.9 percent), despite losing defensive tackle Darnell Dockett and linebacker John Abraham to season-ending injuries. In fact, the Cards had a total of 61 lost games to injury by defensive players.
In case you're wondering, Bowles' former boss, Bruce Arians, was named PFWA Coach of the Year. Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones was named Executive of the Year.
