FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Monday's wake-up call, Day 19 of New York Jets training camp:
What's happening: There's no practice; the players are off. When they return on Tuesday, they will have two full practices before Friday night's game against the Washington Redskins.
What's hot: We're 13 practices into camp, and coach Todd Bowles still is waiting for an outside linebacker or two to blow him away. "They've all got their pluses and minuses," Bowles said. "We're waiting for people to separate." Lorenzo Mauldin and rookie Jordan Jenkins are getting most of the first-team reps, but Freddie Bishop and Josh Martin are being rotated into the lineup. On Sunday, Bishop, the former CFL standout, flashed with a couple of sacks. Bowles said he may take the entire preseason before he settles on two starters. Prediction: It'll be Mauldin and Jenkins, both of whom started the first game. ... Quarterback Bryce Petty is receiving more practice reps than usual this week, but don't go jumping to conclusions. To me, it's not Petty versus Geno Smith for the No. 2 job (not yet, anyway); it's Petty versus Petty. Team brass has to decide if it wants to carry four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, and the key component in that decision is an evaluation of Petty. ... Did Charone Peake too early? The promising rookie wide receiver had a couple drops on Sunday. ... Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson still hasn't participated in team drills. Bowles called it "a gradual process," saying Wilkerson won't practice fully until the day-after soreness disappears. It's the final stage of rehab from a surgically repaired broken leg. ... We hardly knew ye, Christo Bilukidi. The free-agent defensive lineman was waived after leaving camp. He apparently left without saying goodbye. Bowles said they went to Bilukidi's room on Saturday afternoon and he was gone. Maybe he left with the crickets, as Bill Parcells used to say.
