LB Kiko Alonso plans to play in preseason finale

PHILADELPHIA -- Linebacker Kiko Alonso, who missed the first three preseason games, is expected to play in the Philadelphia Eagles' final preseason game against the New York Jets Thursday night.

Alonso, obtained in the trade that sent LeSean McCoy to Buffalo, missed the first two games due to a concussion. Last week in Green Bay, Alonso warmed up expecting to play. He was scratched because of tendinitis in his knee.

Head coach Chip Kelly said he wasn’t even sure which knee was sore.

“You know what?” Kelly said. “I don’t even know. I know that he’s got tendinitis. It’s not very pressing. He didn’t have any issues [Monday]. He’ll go out today and tomorrow and we’ll see where he is.”

Most of the Eagles' starters will not play against the Jets. Inside linebacker DeMeco Ryans, who has played in just one of the three preseason games so far, said this week that he is not scheduled to play.

But Alonso said he wants to get some work in.

“The more reps, the better,” Alonso said. “It’s always good to get reps.”

Alonso hasn’t gotten many for the past two years. He was concussed during an Aug. 8 practice at Lincoln Financial Field. He was running toward the ball carrier when he collided with offensive lineman Malcolm Bunche. Alonso said the concussion was his first and that the symptoms “lingered” longer than he anticipated.

Meanwhile, Alonso had been trying to return from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He tore it while working out in Oregon in July of 2014. Alonso missed the entire 2014 season.

If he doesn’t play Thursday, Alonso’s next opportunity would be the Eagles’ season opener in Atlanta on Sept. 14. That would be about 21 months since Dec. 29, 2013, when Alonso last played in a game.
