Allen Barbre practices, Jason Peters still out for Eagles

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Eagles' injury situation cleared up a little bit Wednesday, the first official day of preparation for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Guard Allen Barbre did not practice Tuesday, for example, but Tuesday practices are part of coach Chip Kelly’s recovery program. Players often sit those practices out if they have an injury that would not keep them from playing in a game.

Barbre has a slight groin injury and said he plans to play against the Saints.

Left tackle Jason Peters (quadriceps), cornerback Byron Maxwell (quadriceps), defensive end Brandon Bair (groin), and linebackers Mychal Kendricks (hamstring) and Kiko Alonso (knee) did not practice. They were listed as “out” on the official injury report.

Right tackle Lane Johnson (knee, ankle) was listed as a limited participant.

Barbre, safety Chris Maragos (quadriceps), and defensive ends Cedric Thornton (hand) and Taylor Hart (shoulder) were listed as full participants in practice. Barring setbacks, they would likely be available for the Saints game.

Kelly may have a problem to solve. If Peters can’t play, Johnson would be his likely replacement. Johnson has said he will practice Thursday and be available Sunday, but it may be a little tougher for him to prepare to play on the left side with limited practice time.

Both Barbre and Matt Tobin can play tackle as well as guard. But that would mean weakening the line at both spots. Dennis Kelly and Josh Andrews would be the next men up at guard.

“We have a couple combinations that we can work there,” Kelly said. “(Wednesday and Thursday) are our two big workdays during the week. And then Friday and Saturday, we’ll take a look at where we are. We’ve got four days to take a look at the combinations we can have in there if Jason can’t go.”
