This is the first in a series of three prove-it posts regarding Pittsburgh Steelers defensive players during organized team activities.
Player: Jarvis Jones
Pedigree: 17th overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft after coming off a decorated 14.5-sack season at Georgia.
Why he must prove it: Three sacks in two years -- that’s the reality. The context is Jones battled a wrist injury that sidelined him for nine games and still isn’t completely right. For the Steelers' defense to work smoothly, they need Jones to break through in the worst way.
Why he really must prove it: The Steelers are applying pressure on Jones by drafting outside linebacker Bud Dupree at No. 22 overall. Dupree and Jones can play together, but if veterans James Harrison and Arthur Moats take ownership of one spot, that leaves Dupree and Jones battling for the other.
Why he will prove it: At 6-foot-2 and around 250 pounds this camp, Jones said he has felt explosive in the open field and in drills. He’s strong enough at 250, he said. Plus, Harrison has mentored Jones this offseason. Jones will never be a 275-pound behemoth, but he likes his size because it makes him versatile against various passing attacks. "250 is fine for me," he said.
Inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons said Joey Porter -- in his first year as the team’s outside linebackers coach -- will benefit Jones because of his knowledge as a former Pro Bowler.
