The Seattle Seahawks announced they have re-signed linebacker Mike Morgan, who was a restricted free agent. The 27-year-old Morgan played for Seahawks coach Pete Carroll at USC before signing with Seattle as an rookie free agent in 2011.
Morgan (6-foot-3, 225 pounds) has spent four seasons with the Seahawks as a back-up outside linebacker and special teams player. Morgan can play the SAM or WILL linebacker spots, but also has value to the team as a special-teams tackler.
He has played in 53 regular-season games with one start, totaling 21 tackles (13 solo), 19 special teams tackles and a 25-yard TD return on a blocked punt against Dallas last season. He also has played in eight postseason games.
It will be interesting to see what the Seahawks do now with outside linebacker Malcolm Smith, who is an unrestricted free agent. Smith was the Super Bowl MVP in the 43-8 victory over Denver in 2014 and played in 14 regular-season games and all three playoff games last season.
Seattle outside linebacker/defensive end O'Brien Schofield also is a free agent. He signed with the New York Giants last spring, but returned to the Seahawks when the deal with the Giants was voided because of a previous knee injury.
