Seahawks move Frank Clark's position back to DE on team's website

After initially listing Frank Clark as a 257-pound linebacker, the Seattle Seahawks' website now has him as a 272-pound defensive end.

The initial change was a mistake, according to a team spokesperson.

Earlier this offseason, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider pointed to Clark as a candidate to help replace Bruce Irvin, who signed with the Oakland Raiders during free agency.

Irvin played a versatile role for the Seahawks. He was their strongside linebacker in base and shifted to right defensive end in nickel. The role came down to three responsibilities: playing the run, rushing the passer and dropping back into coverage.

The first two aspects should be no problem for Clark, but what about the third part?

"He can do it but he’s not a SAM linebacker in our system," Schneider said at the owners meetings. "Bruce is so athletic, he’s freaky athletic. Jumps over people."

According to Pro Football Focus, on passing downs last year, Irvin dropped into coverage 30.5 percent of the time.

Carroll indicated that the plan is to fill Irvin's role with multiple players. Clark is probably the best option the team has to take over as a pass-rusher from the right side. Mike Morgan could see time at strongside linebacker on early downs. Cassius Marsh and Chris Clemons could figure in as well.

"Frank Clark is going to really help us," Carroll said at the owners meetings. "We think Frank is going to be a premier rusher. He showed that last year. And so losing Bruce as an outside guy on the right side really opens up the opportunity for Frank to step up and to do some good things for us. But there may not be one guy that we have to load up with at the Sam 'backer spot and also play [defensive end]. Mike Morgan did really well for us when he played there last year at the Sam spot, but he’s not going to be the third-down rusher. So it’s going to be a combination of guys playing."

The most likely scenario is that Clark sees most of his snaps at right defensive end, and the Seahawks use a different player at strongside linebacker in their base look. He certainly could drop weight, but Clark is not expected to make a full switch to linebacker.
