Seahawks should focus on an offensive tackle in free agency

Here are the moves the Seattle Seahawks should consider when free agency opens at 4 p.m. ET Thursday:

Find an offensive tackle: At the combine, general manager John Schneider admitted the Seahawks went too young on the offensive line last season and could have benefited from a veteran. This is the Seahawks' chance to make sure they don't run into the same problem in 2017. The organization is bullish on George Fant at left tackle, but he's still raw. Counting on him to develop into a quality starter in his second year without a backup plan would be a mistake. At right tackle, Garry Gilliam is a restricted free agent. The name that might make the most sense for Seattle is Russell Okung. He spent six years with the Seahawks and fits their culture. Okung's best days might be behind him, but he would instantly be the Seahawks' best tackle and could serve a mentor role to guys like Fant, Germain Ifedi and Mark Glowinski.

The X factor here is Ifedi. The team originally drafted him to play right tackle but immediately moved him to guard, and Pete Carroll said the plan is for him to stay there for now. If the Seahawks decide Ifedi can play right tackle, they could look for a guard in free agency.

Bargain shop on the defensive line: This is where the Seahawks have had their most success in free agency. Of their 22 starters, the only three who were added as unrestricted free agents originally are all defensive linemen -- Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril and Ahtyba Rubin. The Seahawks have a good pass rush with Bennett, Avril and Frank Clark, but they need more depth. Could they make a splash with an older player like Julius Peppers on a one-year deal? Or perhaps an under-the-radar player like Devin Taylor who has the physical tools Seattle covets but has yet to reach his potential? Expect the Seahawks to be patient here. They'll let the big names go off the market in the first few days of free agency, assess who's left and then look to add some pass rush.

Add depth at safety: One of the Seahawks' first orders of business should be to extend Kam Chancellor, who is entering the final year of his contract. But they also need to add depth. Backup Kelcie McCray is a free agent, and Steven Terrell struggled last season as the pass defense fell apart without Earl Thomas. The Seahawks could certainly look to add safety help in the draft, but adding a veteran who fits their scheme, can be an adequate backup and can play special teams makes sense.
