Bucs' Clemson connection confident Tigers can win national title game

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Adam Humphries and Clemson University have something in common. Both are considered underdogs.

And like Humphries, who overcame not being drafted to become an important part of the Tampa Bay offense in 2015, he believes Clemson will overcome the odds and beat Alabama to win the college football national championship.

"I'm always confident in my team," said Humphries, who played for Clemson from 2011-14. "Coach [Dabo] Swinney does a good job of getting guys ready to play. I know getting ready for Alabama, it is going to be easy for him to get the guys ready because a team like that deserves a lot of respect. I think our guys will be ready to play and I look forward to seeing what they're going to do."

Clemson takes on Alabama on Monday night in Glendale, Arizona, for the title. Alabama is favored to win.

Humphries has proven people wrong all season. He made his way through the rookie minicamp and landed an invitation to training camp. Then the 5-foot-11, 195-pound receiver made the Bucs' opening-day roster. He played in three of the first four games before being sent down to the practice squad. Humphries had a two-week stint there before being promoted back to the active roster, where he spent the final 10 games of the season.

For the season, he was fifth on the team with 27 catches for 260 yards and a touchdown.

"This year I had had some ups and downs," he said Monday. "But I feel like coming in as an undrafted rookie tryout guy, I impressed some people."

Humphries isn't the only "Clemson" Buccaneer who is confident in the Tigers' chances, despite being a seven-point underdog by most betting sites. Defensive linemen Da'Quan Bowers and Kourtnei Brown both believe the Tigers have been overlooked despite being the No. 1 seed. They look for Clemson to prove its worth Monday.

"I knew it all along this was going to be a special season," Bowers said. "I tried to warn everybody. I'm looking forward to (Monday). We know what Alabama is going to do. They're a physical team. We just have to play our style of football."

Brown was even more vocal in his belief in the underdog Tigers.

"We're undefeated but it seems like we're always still proving people wrong," Brown said. "We've been kicking butt all season and we're going to do the same thing with Bama."
