Spencer Lanning to challenge Michael Koenen for punting job

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have brought in a legitimate challenger to punter Michael Koenen.

The team claimed Spencer Lanning off waivers from the Cleveland Browns and he and Koenen will compete for the punting job in training camp and the preseason.

Koenen is coming off a season in which he ranked last in the league in gross average (40.4 yards). The Bucs said several times they weren't concerned by Koenen's average because they were putting more emphasis on hang time and location.

But the arrival of Lanning shows the Bucs might not have been completely happy with Koenen. Lanning spent the past two seasons with Cleveland, where he averaged 44.1 yards per punt.
