With today's win, the Orcas move into second place in the standings, while the Super Kings drop to the bottom of the table. That is all the action we have for you from this match, folks. Join Rvel for the second game of the doubleheader coming up shortly on the same ground. Signing off on behalf of Vairavan Karuppiah and myself, Rashad Mahbub. Goodbye!
Marcus Stoinis: "Nice to pull that off after we've lost a couple of close ones throughout the tournament. Full credit to all the boys; even the batters. Even though it wasn't the score we wanted, we ended up fighting to a reasonable target and giving our bowlers something to defend. And then our bowlers did a great job. [Lower order] Yeah, I'm assuming he'll [Harmeet] get a scan. It's unfortunate with his hamstring, but he did a great job to not only put some runs on the board, but then go back out there and have another swing. I know he would have loved to be out there with the boys, but unfortunately, he couldn't. He'll get a scan in the next couple of days. And then Gano [Gannon] with the bat surprised us all. It looked like he was going to get run out a few times, and there was a lot happening at both the striker's and non-striker's end, but he did well in the field as well. [Baartman and Shanaka] Baarts [Baartman] has been awesome throughout the whole tournament, so consistent. I can bowl him in tough overs, and he's turned the game when we've needed him. And then Dasun bowled well throughout the whole game, really. But that last over under pressure - I mean, a double hat-trick is one thing, but more so, just stepping up under pressure and sealing the game for us."
Player of the Match, Dasun Shanaka: "[First ever hat-trick?] Of course, indeed it is. Yeah, in all my cricket career. [A certain Sri Lankan who got four in four before] Of course, the one and only great Lasith Malinga, my captain. [What does it feel like to be the second Sri Lankan to do it?] You know, it feels amazing to get a double hat-trick. It's a different stage [than Malinga], but I'm really happy. [Were you happy to bowl the final over?] I had a bad day when we played in San Francisco, so I knew that it was going to be myself or Stoinis at the end. After he bowled his four overs, I was the only one left to bowl the last over. Donovan was on strike, and he's the kind of player who can finish games from nowhere, so I'm happy to get his wicket. It was the icing on the cake. It's a day I'll never forget. At the same time, our bowlers bowled really well, and we also defended the target well."
Faf du Plessis: "Yeah, disappointed. Obviously, a low-scoring thriller that you feel like you can get across the line, but it was hard work. You have to give credit to the way Baartman bowled; he got quite a bit out of the pitch. [Any particular moment in your batting innings which let the game slip away?] It's difficult to say because the nature of the pitch is not one where you feel like there's just a single moment. Our method was to try and take it deep because it's not the kind of wicket where you can just take the game on and get boundaries. It's almost like playing one-day cricket in the middle period, where the guys were trying to extend the partnership. But it's also important that the run rate doesn't creep up too high, because the surface doesn't allow you to go at 12, 13, or 14 an over toward the back end. It's easier said than done, though, with the ball moving quite a bit. [How do you rebound from this with two games left?] Yeah, we have to. The nature of the competition is still such that if you play well, you can improve your net run rate and get through. We weren't at our best here in LA, so we go back to our home turf and hopefully we can bring our best."
6:25 pm Phew! Who says low-scoring matches are boring? This game had the crowd right on the edge of their seats as it ebbed and flowed from start to finish. The Orcas have done the unthinkable here at Pomona! On a pitch that offered variable bounce throughout, the men in yellow found themselves in early trouble with the bat too, as Baartman removed both opening batters in the third over with a pair of scorching inswingers. The Super Kings were struggling at 35 for 3 after the Powerplay, and Baartman struck again in the 11th over to dismiss Mulder. From there, the required rate climbed past 10 runs an over, with boundaries drying up and rotating the strike becoming incredibly difficult. Yet, the chase went right down to the wire, thanks to Ranjane's anchoring innings and Ferreira's late cameo of 22 runs. Heading into the final over, Ranjane was left stranded at the non-striker's end, giving him the best seat in the house for the Dasun Shanaka show. Shanaka struck with four consecutive deliveries, picking up a dramatic hat-trick before claiming a fourth wicket on the trot to seal the deal for the Orcas. Ranjane remained unbeaten on 40 off 44 balls, completely helpless at the other end. Earlier, Baartman was phenomenal with the ball, picking up 3 wickets and conceding only 9 runs in his four-over spell. Those lower-order batting contributions of the Orcas and the missed run-out chances in the first innings proved to be costly in the end for the Super Kings. Post-match presentations coming up next, folks!
