6:45pm England's first ODI defeat at Edgbaston since 2014. A fine run-chase from India, thanks to a solid beginning from Gill and a superb finish from Axar and Washington at the end. They added an unconquered 102 together after India had seen three of their batters walk back in the space of 11 runs. The target was hardly going to challenge them given the conditions. But at 160 for 4, India were in a spot of bother, especially with the set Gill retiring hurt. India would also be pleased with their captain's innings till he walked back. Iyer was slightly scratchy and so was Rohit.
England's batting let them down today. Root and Dawson managed to get them to a par score and that was enough to give England a glimmer. Archer was pumped up at the start, and it seemed they could push India to the brink. But Gill first, and then Axar and Washington, ensured it was a smooth chase. Presentation shortly.
Shadow-Shell: "I'm sorry! Jemi did what?" Yep
Axar Patel, Player of the Match: "Very happy with the way I performed today. I thought of varying my pace and bowl stump to stump. Did exactly that. Got lucky that I picked up four wickets. With Washington, it was about rotating the strike and finishing the game well. When I went in, Washy was there. The thought was building a partnership and finishing the game."
Harry Brook, England captain"Not ideal when you lose 5 for 20 in the middle period. Boys fought well and tried to get us back with the ball. Great effort from the lads. Losing 5 for 20 never ideal. Liked to have played slightly better. 260 on the board, partnership between Root and Dawson was crucial. We thought the pitch changed. Goit slower. At the break, we thought we had enough if the pitch had remained the same. We'll make selections based on the pitch. On another day we make 300-320 and our spinners make a match of it."
Shubman Gill, India captain: "When you see your middle and lower middle order score runs and finish the job, it gives confidence as a captain. It was about our combination. We have a youngish bowling attack. Our batting is more experienced than our bowling. So even if we had a target of 300-320, we back ourselves to chase that. Our bowling in the middle phase was good. We bowled the right areas, they got away at the end of the powerplay. We were put under pressure but how we came back and bounced back was important. We'll try different combinations and see which gives us the best depth in both departments. The conditions were close to South Africa - the ball was kicking up, wasn't easy to score. The wicket then settled nicely."
Right then. India go 1-0 up in Birmingham. The games will come thick and fast. The second game is in Cardiff day afgter tomorrow. Do join us for the coverage then. Until next time, on behalf of George, Ranjith and Vairavan, this is Sudarshanan bidding you goodbye. Take care!
Can Washy finish it and also get to his half-century?
Praveen: "A fifty and a 4-fer in an ODI is rare. Who was the last Indian to get it. Deepti Sharma would feature multiple times on this list." Axar Patel is the 6th Indian man to do so & first since Hardik Pandya in 2022 who also did it v England in Manchester. Jemimah Rodrigues & Deepti Sharma twice (both in the last ODI WC) are the two Indian women to do so, says Deep Gadhia
