Canterbury are pressing ahead with negotiations to retain Jacob Preston despite suggestions that talks had stalled, with Bulldogs general manager Phil Gould expected to meet with the back-rower's management as the Bulldogs look to advance talks.

Sources have told ESPN that talks between the two parties remain active as the Bulldogs continue their push to secure Preston beyond his current deal, which runs through the end of 2027.

Preston has reportedly rejected Canterbury's latest offer, while significant rival interest has emerged in the 24-year-old ahead of his November 1 free-agency date.

Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo pushed back against suggestions this week that negotiations had reached a standstill, maintaining his confidence that Preston will remain at Belmore.

Meanwhile, ESPN understands Canterbury are also showing genuine interest in Parramatta playmaker Ronald Volkman as the club assesses its roster options for 2027.

Multiple sources have confirmed the Bulldogs' interest in Volkman, with Gould also expected to meet with the playmaker's management as Canterbury explore the possibility of bringing him to Belmore.

Parramatta, however, remain interested in retaining the off-contract playmaker, with the Eels also keen to keep Volkman beyond this season.

The 24-year-old has re-established himself at NRL level with Parramatta this season following an injury-interrupted period earlier in his career.
