Sources have told ESPN that discussions are underway over allowing the 23-year-old to explore opportunities elsewhere, despite De Groot remaining contracted through the end of 2027.
Permission to negotiate with rival clubs has not yet been formally granted, however ESPN understands there is growing interest from rival clubs in De Groot should he become available.
Meanwhile, Newcastle are expected to show interest in NSW winger Jack Bostock should Bradman Best depart the Knights.
Bostock, who made his State of Origin debut this season, is contracted to the Dolphins through 2027 and shapes as one of the more sought-after outside backs ahead of the November 1 market opening.
A move to the Hunter could also hold appeal for Bostock, who is understood to have close ties to Newcastle.
