There are plenty of talking points after the AFL awards night on Tuesday, with Max Gawn now holding the outright record for most All-Australian blazers with nine. But is it a mark that'll stand forever?
Let's get to this week's overreactions column, where we judge the biggest takeaways as legitimate or irrational.
Max Gawn's mark of nine All-Australians won't be beaten
On Tuesday night, towering Demons ruck Max Gawn was rewarded for another stellar year with his ninth All-Australian blazer, an outright record.
Gawn's latest inclusion pushed him clear of fellow all-time greats Gary Ablett Sr, Gary Ablett Jr, Patrick Dangerfield, Lance Franklin, Robert Harvey, Mark Ricciuto, and now Marcus Bontempelli, who all have eight blazers to their name.
At 34 years of age, he's not yet showing signs of slowing down, so he may well add to his tally next year. But is his current mark of nine unbeatable? Given the log-jam that exists at eight blazers, could he stand alone at nine? Will another bottleneck form? Or is someone poised to pounce?
Verdict: Overreaction
It's an incredible effort from Gawn, especially in a position from which usually just one player is selected in the side.
To break clear of some of the legendary names with eight AA nods is a staggering feat which should rightly be lauded and appreciated. Think about it -- he just about needs a separate wardrobe to hold the nine blazers!
But you get the feeling it won't be a mark that stands for too long.
Aside from the obvious, being Bulldogs skipper Bontempelli with an astonishing eight blazers at 30 years of age (Gawn is 34), there are a couple of candidates to keep an eye on.
Luke Jackson just secured his first All-Australian at 24 years of age (the same age Gawn first won selection) and could be the heir to the AFL's ruck throne.
And there's a guy with four AA marks who is just 23, and that's Nick Daicos.
Say he plays another 10 years and is All-Australian in half of those, he's matching the nine of Gawn. Given he's played five seasons and has made the team four times, that's conservative.
And the reality is that midfielders have more opportunities to make the team; three in the middle, plus bench spots and possibly even the wings or flanks if the selectors are feeling particularly midfielder-y.
So while breaking through the 'pack' of eight-time All-Australians is a mammoth achievement from Gawn -- who will surely go down as the best ruck to ever play the game -- don't go thinking it's an unbeatable mark.
Because it could be bested in just a couple of years if Bontempelli has his say, or further down the track if Nick Daicos keeps dominating the competition.
