JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars have only had two training camp practices, but coach Gus Bradley is already impressed with what he’s seen from second-year quarterback Blake Bortles.
Bradley said he likes Bortles’ command of the offense and the way he is throwing the ball after Bortles spent the offseason fixing some mechanical issues with his delivery.
"His accuracy is good for this early, especially," Bradley said Saturday afternoon. "I like his mechanics. I think you guys said you had noticed that. His mechanics, his poise [are good]. His big thing is he wants to own the offense so he can play at a higher level without thinking a lot, and that’s what he’s doing.
"You can tell he put in his time over the summer with the knowledge of the offense."
Bortles completed 13 of 22 passes in 11-on-11 sessions during his first two days of practice. He went 7-for-12 on Friday, but two of those incompletions were drops.
Some tidbits from Saturday’s practice:
Receiver Allen Robinson made another acrobatic catch on Saturday. Cornerback Davon House had great coverage and knocked the ball up in the air, but Robinson grabbed the rebound for a gain that would have been good for a first down.
The Jaguars did one-on-one OL vs. DL pass-rushing drills and it wasn’t a good start for left tackle Luke Joeckel. Defensive end Ryan Davis beat him twice and Joeckel also had a false start.
Right tackle Jermey Parnell absolutely stoned defensive end Andre Branch twice. Defensive tackle Abry Jones easily blew by center Luke Bowanko but Bowanko came right back on the next snap and stopped Jones.
One of the more interesting battles was rookie guard A.J. Cann going against rookie defensive tackle Michael Bennett. Bennett won the first matchup relatively easily but Cann stopped him on the second snap.
There was a minor scuffle between offensive tackle Brennan Williams and defensive end Ikponmwosa Igbinosun after one play in 11-on-11. It was quickly broken up.
Center Stefen Wisniewski took snaps with the first-team offense. Bowanko took first-team snaps Friday. The two are competing for the starting job and Bradley said they will rotate snaps with the first-team offense throughout camp.
