OXNARD, Calif. -- Moments after the Los Angeles Rams used the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft on quarterback Jared Goff, he was asked about where his sports allegiance lies, particularly when it comes to baseball.
Goff, who grew up in Novato, California, about 30 miles north of San Francisco, had made it clear via his social media accounts that he was a lover of most of the Bay Area professional sports teams. That includes the San Francisco 49ers, San Francisco Giants and the Golden State Warriors. Shedding the 49ers love will be easy enough for Goff, who very well could face them in the season opener on Monday Night Football if and when he wins the starting job.
But the natural rivalry between northern California and southern California's largest metropolitan areas left some fans wondering if Goff would be willing to disavow his love for his favorite teams.
Asked the question that he can't seem to shake and has nothing to do with football again on Wednesday, this time the attention turned to basketball. With his Warriors set to begin the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Goff reaffirmed his faith in his team but also said he'd be open to adding another favorite team.
“I am a Warriors fan, Goff said. "I have been forever. [I] plan to have a little bit of a dual fanship with the Lakers as well.”
What about the Clippers?
“Maybe them too," Goff said, laughing. "I like all of the teams down here.”
Of course, nobody could reasonably expect Goff to forgo a lifetime rooting interest in his hometown teams but he's clearly been quick to understand just how much the topic seems to mean to some fans in the Los Angeles area.
“It’s been interesting trying to do that transition, especially publicly," Goff said. "I’m obviously born and raised in the Bay and am making the transition down here and making the transition to the fan bases down here and politicking it a little bit, doing the best I can.”
It's just one more adjustment Goff has to make in his adjustment to the NFL.
